So, I decided I was going to get really into following Matt Campbell’s racing career. You know, properly. I thought, this guy’s talented, he’s Aussie, what’s not to like? My plan was simple: watch all the races, keep up with the news, maybe even get some cool team gear. Seemed straightforward enough at the start.

My Grand Plan Hits Reality

Well, let me tell you, that “straightforward” idea went out the window pretty fast. First off, the races. Trying to catch every single one? Good luck with that. It became a full-time job just figuring out where and when they were happening.

  • Time zones, man. He races all over the place. Europe, America, sometimes back home. My sleep schedule? Completely shot. I was waking up at 3 AM for some, staying up till midnight for others. My coffee bill went through the roof.
  • Then there’s the actual broadcasting. It’s a total mess. One race is on a subscription service I barely use, the next is hidden behind some pay-per-view wall on a website I’ve never even heard of. I swear, I had a list of logins and passwords just for racing. It felt like I was juggling way too many balls.
  • And if you miss one? Trying to find a decent replay without spoilers? Almost impossible. You basically have to go into a social media lockdown until you can catch up.

I figured, okay, races are tough, but I can at least keep up with the news, right? Get the inside scoop. Hah! Most of what you find is just PR fluff from the teams or crazy rumors on fan forums. Trying to find genuine, solid information felt like panning for gold in a muddy stream. You spend hours sifting through stuff just to find a tiny nugget of actual news.

Then came the merchandise. I thought, “I’ll get a cool cap, maybe a team shirt. Show some support.” Simple, right? Nope. I remember trying to find this one specific Porsche cap he’d worn. I saw a picture, thought it looked awesome. Weeks, I tell you, weeks I spent searching. I was all over the internet, official team shops, those reseller sites. Nothing. Or, if I did find something, it was either a knock-off from some dodgy site or priced like it was made of solid gold.

I even emailed a couple of team contacts I found buried deep in some website. Did I get a reply? Of course not. It was like shouting into the void. It’s funny, you see these drivers, these big teams, and you think it’s all super slick and organized. But trying to be a fan and get a simple piece of merch? It felt like they didn’t really want my money, or at least they weren’t making it easy.

It’s not just Matt Campbell, mind you. It feels like the whole motorsport fan experience is this weird, clunky thing. Like all the different parts – the broadcasts, the news, the merch – they’re all run by different people who never, ever talk to each other. You’d think they’d want to make it easy for folks to follow and support their favorite drivers, but sometimes it feels like an obstacle course.

So, that was my big dive into the world of closely following a race car driver. I still like watching Matt Campbell race, don’t get me wrong. The guy can drive. But that whole idea of being a super-dedicated, know-everything, have-all-the-gear fan? I’ve kind of scaled that back. My sleep, my sanity, and definitely my bank account are much happier for it. It’s a great sport, but man, they don’t always make it easy to love.
