Alright, let’s talk about redshirting in Road to Glory. It’s something I messed around with quite a bit back in the day because, you know, sometimes your shiny new recruit just isn’t ready for the big leagues, or maybe the depth chart is just stacked.

My First Attempt – Figuring Things Out
So, I created my player, a quarterback, obviously. Thought he was gonna be the next big thing. Got him onto a decent team, maybe like Oregon or somewhere cool. First thing I noticed was, there wasn’t just a big button that said “REDSHIRT ME”. Nah, that would be too easy.
I remember digging through the menus. Player status, team rosters, coach options… nothing obvious. So, I thought, how does redshirting work in real life? You don’t play, right? That seemed like the key.
Making Sure I Didn’t Play
What I ended up doing was diving into the depth chart. This was the crucial part, I think.
- I found my player on the QB list. He was probably like 3rd or 4th string anyway, wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire yet.
- To be absolutely sure, I buried him. Moved him down to the very last spot. Like, 5th string, behind walk-ons if I could. Made sure he wasn’t even listed on special teams.
- My goal was simple: make it impossible for the CPU coach to even think about putting me in the game.
The Waiting Game
Then came the tough part. I had to actually get through the season. I mostly simmed the games week by week. Some folks say you have to play the first game and make sure you don’t get snaps, but I just simmed from the get-go, I think.
Each week, I’d nervously check the box score or the game summary. Just looking to see if my player name popped up with any stats. Zero snaps, zero passes, zero carries. That was the goal. It felt weird, basically rooting against myself playing.

There was always that worry, you know? What if the top 3 QBs all got injured in the same game during a sim? Could the CPU still put me in? It was a bit nerve-wracking, honestly.
Checking the Status – Did it Work?
I kept doing this week after week. Sim, check, repeat. The season finally ended. Went through all the offseason stuff, training, etc. The moment of truth was when the new season started up.
I went straight to my player card or the roster screen. And there it was. Instead of being listed as a Sophomore, my guy was listed as a “Freshman (RS)” or sometimes just “FR” again but with a year of eligibility saved. Success! His stats had improved a bit from the training, but he still had all four years left to play.
So yeah, that’s how I did it. It wasn’t a specific menu option, it was about manipulating the depth chart to guarantee I never saw the field that first year. Worked for me, hope it helps you out if you’re trying to do the same thing.
