So today I was just sitting around wondering how big Münster really is compared to other German cities. You know how it is – you live somewhere and kinda assume it’s important, but then you’re like, wait, is it actually?

Starting with the obvious
First thing, I googled “Münster population.” Boom. Got a number right away from some stats site – around 320,000 people. Okay, not tiny, but also not massive. Didn’t feel like that told me much though. Like, where does that actually put it?
The deep dive into Wikipedia
Next step? Hit up Wikipedia’s “List of cities in Germany by population.” This list was LONG. Seriously, scrolled forever. Started from the top:
- Berlin: Whoa, over 3.7 million. No contest there.
- Hamburg: Like 1.8 million. Way bigger.
- Munich: Also huge, 1.5 million.
Just scanning down… Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf… all way above Münster. Started feeling like my city was shrinking on the screen!
Finding Münster in the crowd
Kept scrolling, looking for that magic “M.” Passed Dresden, Leipzig, Nuremberg… still bigger. Got to Dortmund – about 600k. Bigger. Duisburg? Bigger. Bochum? Bigger. Finally saw Münster pop up.
Here’s the kicker: it was much lower than I thought! Sitting around number 20-something on the list. Around 320k puts it behind places I definitely thought were smaller or similar, like Bonn or Mannheim. Even Karlsruhe and Freiburg were in the ballpark. Felt kinda eye-opening, you know?

The final ranking
According to the list, Münster is somewhere around #20 to #25 in Germany by population. Like, solidly in the top 30, which is nice, but not a major player size-wise. Surprised me because it feels like a significant place culturally and historically. But numbers don’t lie.
So yeah, my city? Not a giant metropolis. More like a comfortable medium-sized player on the national stage. Puts things in perspective!
