My Morning Brainstorm Session

Woke up kinda early, April 18th staring me down. Coffee mug in hand, stared blankly at a notepad. Needed fun stuff for family and friends later. Ideas bounced around like ping pong balls. Wanted simple, cheap, and stuff everyone could join, old and young.

Grabbed my phone first. Scrolled through old pictures. Big group shots from last summer’s BBQ, my niece’s muddy art projects… Bam! Memories clicked. That was the vibe I wanted – relaxed, laugh-filled, no fancy pressure. Scribbled down: shared eats, silly games anyone can play, maybe sharing old stories or dreams, and something chill for later.

Getting Stuff Together

Didn’t wanna run around last minute. Stood in my kinda messy kitchen, mentally checking the fridge. Okay, basic pizza dough ingredients? Yeast, flour… check. Toppings? Found leftover ham, wrinkly peppers about to turn, a lone can of pineapple. Good enough, I thought. Threw dough ingredients in the bowl, slapped the lid on the mixer. While that noisy thing churned, hit the market.

Went for quick snacks that scream party: chips obviously, that giant tub of pretzels, tons of fruit cause it looks cheerful. Spotted mini cupcakes on sale – score! Perfect cheap treat. Back home, shoved groceries onto counters. Dough needed rising, so shifted gears. Dug into my closet, pulled out:

  • The trusty old croquet set (dusty!).
  • A stack of mismatched blankets and pillows.
  • My ancient but reliable Bluetooth speaker.
  • And for some reason, a box full of mismatched puzzle pieces I kept meaning to throw out.

Put the pizzas together – ham & pineapple for the weirdos like me, plain cheese for the kids, ham & wrinkly pepper for everyone else. Stuffed them in the oven.

The Actual Shenanigans

Family started trickling in first, around 4ish. Kids immediately eyeing the snacks. “Chill!” I yelled, pointing outside. “Croquet time!” Set it up kinda crookedly on the uneven patchy grass. Didn’t matter. My brother immediately started cheating, pushing my sister-in-law’s ball away with his foot. Arguments erupted, everyone laughing. Neighbor kids wandered over, watched. “Get in here!” I yelled. Suddenly it was chaos, kids wildly swinging mallets, adults pretending to be Olympic judges. Utterly ridiculous, totally fun.

Came inside smelling burnt crust. Yup, got distracted, slightly charred a pizza. Chopped off the worst bits with kitchen scissors (hack job!), sliced it quick. Plopped everything on the table. “Food’s up!” Kids descended like locusts. Adults followed. Picnic style on the living room floor with all the blankets and pillows thrown down. Crumbs everywhere instantly. Perfect.

Once the food coma hit a bit, cranked up the speaker. Tunes for chatting. Then, pulled out the puzzles box. “Alright,” I announced, dumping the box in the center of the blanket pile. “Find 5 pieces that connect.” Instant groans. But slowly, fingers started poking through cardboard. “Got one!” my niece yelled. “That’s mine!” my nephew argued. Became this weird, quiet scavenger hunt mixed with minor squabbles. Strange energy, but everyone was focused together.

As it got dark, shuffled everyone outside (dragging blankets!). My backyard’s barely dark, streetlights everywhere. Not ideal. “Okay, okay,” I sighed, pointing up. “One constellation finder prize! Go!” Neck craning commenced. My sister-in-law pointed vaguely: “Is that… maybe the Big Dipper handle?” Debates fired up. Mostly nonsense guesses. Didn’t matter. Just lying there, bundled up, chuckling at bad astronomy and saying dumb space jokes. Felt easy.

Wrapping Up the Mess

Folks started yawning around 9. Kids were basically sleepwalking. Good sign! Hugs happened, tired smiles all around. “That was fun,” my brother mumbled, grabbing a leftover cupcake on the way out. Felt good hearing it.

Stood alone in the warzone after: couch cushions still on the floor, pretzel crumbs glinting like evil glitter, pizza crusts congealing on plates. Giant sigh. But as I shoved plates into the sudsy water, I was grinning. Yeah, burnt a pizza. Yeah, the “stargazing” was mostly imagining. But everyone laughed. Didn’t cost much. Didn’t need perfect. Just needed people together being goofy. Mission accomplished for April 18th. Gonna sleep well tonight.
