My Dive into TikTok Group Chats

Alright, so I heard about group chats on TikTok. Didn’t really get why at first, you know? TikTok felt like a place for watching videos, not really for long chats with multiple people. But I figured, why not give it a try, see what it’s all about.

Finding it wasn’t super straightforward. I remember poking around my inbox, the direct message section. It wasn’t like a big button screaming ‘Start Group Chat’. I had to actually start a message with one person first. Then, I saw this little icon, looked like adding more people. Clicked on that.

So I picked a couple of friends who are also on TikTok a lot. You just tap their names from your list. Simple enough once I found it. Named the group something silly, I forget what now. And boom, the group chat was made.

Using it felt… well, basic. Very basic. It’s pretty much just like the regular one-on-one DMs on TikTok, but with more people in the same window. We could type messages, send emojis, the usual stuff. We also tried sending TikTok videos directly into the chat. That part worked okay, easy to share a funny video we all saw and talk about it right there.

Here’s what I noticed though:

  • It got messy kinda fast if people were talking at once. Just a stream of messages.
  • Notifications could be a bit much if the group was active. Had to mute it sometimes.
  • It really just felt like sending DMs, but slightly more chaotic.

Compared to other apps I use for group messaging, like WhatsApp or even Messenger, it felt barebones. No fancy features, just text and sharing TikToks. You couldn’t easily search the chat history, or pin messages, or do polls, none of that stuff I sometimes use elsewhere.

Honestly, after the initial tryout, I didn’t use it much. We went back to our usual chat apps pretty quickly. It was okay for sharing a TikTok video and having a quick laugh with a few people right then and there, but for anything more involved? Nah. It just didn’t stick for me and my friends.

So yeah, I fiddled with TikTok group chat. It exists. It works, technically. But it feels like an add-on, not something central to the whole TikTok experience. Just my two cents after actually trying to use it for a bit.
