Alright folks, let me tell you about this little project I wrapped up recently – snagging the “Comeback Athlete of the Year” award. Not a real award, mind you, but a personal one. I basically dragged myself back into shape after letting things slide for way too long.

It all started with that dreaded moment: stepping on the scale. Numbers I hadn’t seen in years. That was the kick in the butt I needed. I decided, right then and there, to make a change. No more excuses.
First thing I did was clean up the diet. No crazy fad diets, just basic healthy eating. More veggies, lean protein, less junk. I started tracking my calories using a simple app – MyFitnessPal, nothing fancy. Just to get a handle on what I was actually consuming.
Next up: exercise. I hadn’t been to a gym in ages. The thought of it was intimidating. So, I started small. Walks around the neighborhood. Gradual increase in distance and pace. Then, I added some bodyweight exercises at home – push-ups, squats, lunges. Nothing crazy, just enough to get the blood flowing.
After a few weeks, I felt a little braver. I decided to join a local gym. The first few sessions were rough. I was sore, winded, and felt like everyone was staring at me. But I stuck with it. I started with basic weight training, focusing on form over weight. I also incorporated some cardio – treadmill, elliptical, whatever I felt like.
The key was consistency. I aimed for at least 3 workouts a week. Some weeks I did more, some weeks less. But I always made sure to get something in. I also made sure to listen to my body. Rest when I needed it. No point in pushing myself too hard and getting injured.

As the weeks turned into months, I started to see results. The weight started to come off. My clothes started to fit better. I felt stronger, more energetic. But more importantly, I felt good about myself. I was proud of the progress I was making.
One thing that really helped was finding an activity I actually enjoyed. I joined a local basketball league. I hadn’t played in years, but it was a blast. It was a great way to get some extra cardio in, and it was also a lot of fun. Plus, it helped me stay motivated.
There were definitely setbacks. Days when I didn’t want to work out. Times when I binged on junk food. But I didn’t let those setbacks derail me. I just acknowledged them, learned from them, and moved on.
So, after about a year of hard work, I can finally say I’m back in shape. Not perfect shape, mind you. But a hell of a lot better than where I started. I’ve lost weight, gained muscle, and most importantly, I feel great. And that’s why I’m awarding myself the “Comeback Athlete of the Year” award. It’s a testament to the power of consistency, perseverance, and a little bit of self-discipline.
Here’s a quick recap of the steps I took:

- Acknowledged the problem and made a decision to change.
- Cleaned up my diet and started tracking calories.
- Started with small, manageable exercises.
- Joined a gym and incorporated weight training and cardio.
- Found an activity I enjoyed to stay motivated.
- Stayed consistent and listened to my body.
- Didn’t let setbacks derail me.
It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. If I can do it, anyone can. Just start small, stay consistent, and don’t give up on yourself.
