My Beginner Golf Adventure in Spain
So I finally dragged my lazy bum to try golf here in Spain last month. Always thought golf was boring but man was I wrong! Started simple by borrowing a half-broken 7-iron from my neighbor Paco instead of buying expensive clubs straight away.

Finding Beginner-Friendly Courses
Googled “golf for dummies near Malaga” and found three decent places. Ended up choosing Green Valley Golf cause their website said “no pressure for beginners” and they rent everything cheap. Called them up and the dude spoke English thank god cause my Spanish is still “hola” and “cerveza”.
First Time on the Course
Showed up wearing sneakers like an idiot – pro tip: wear shoes with grip! The instructor Javier put me on this baby course with huge holes, no water traps or sand pits. Just wide open spaces like a football field. Taught me two things:
- Hold the club like you’re shaking hands
- Hit the ball like you’re smacking a mosquito on the ground
Swing felt super awkward at first. Took like 15 tries just to make the ball lift off the damn tee. Javier kept saying “relax your shoulders!” but I was sweating buckets. Finally got one airborne – best feeling ever even though it only flew 20 meters!
Keeping It Simple
Next weekend tried Sunny Hills Par 3 course. Only 9 holes with zero obstacles. Didn’t even keep score cause who cares? Just focused on not breaking my wrist. When I messed up, nobody glared cause most players were beginners like me. The group behind even cheered when I finally got the ball in after 10 swings.
Now I go every Sunday morning with Paco. Still absolute crap but hitting that one good shot makes me feel like Tiger Woods. If this 40-year-old grandpa can do it, trust me – anybody can!
