Okay, so the other day, I was watching a basketball game with a buddy, and he kept throwing around this term “FGA.” I’d heard it before, but I wasn’t 100% sure what it meant. So, I decided to finally figure it out, and here’s my little journey of discovery.

What is FGA in Basketball? (Decoding the Key Stat for Scoring!)

First Step: Quick Search

First, I grabbed my phone and did a quick search. Immediately I found that FGA stands for “Field Goal Attempt.” Okay, cool, that’s a start. But I wanted a more detailed explanation, so that I could understand every detail.

Digging a Little Deeper

Then I started reading through some articles and forum posts. The basic definition is pretty straightforward. Basically, every time a player tries to shoot the ball at the basket, trying to score, it is counted as FGA. I found some useful data that showed that FGA is not counted when a player is fouled in the act of shooting and missed.

Putting It All Together

So, after I gathered all this info, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on FGA. It’s simply any shot a player takes towards the basket, with a missed goal while shooting does not count. Now, when I watch games, I can follow along better and understand what’s going on with those stats!
