My Stupid PS4 Controls Went Kaput During NBA 2K
Alright, so picture this. Last night, fired up my PS4, itching to dunk on some fools in 2K. Grabbed my controller, hopped into a game, and boom… nothing.
Seriously, my dude just stood there like a statue. Pushed every button, mashed the sticks, tried every dribble move – total brick. Controller worked fine on the home screen, soon as that game loaded? Dead. Thought maybe the controller finally kicked the bucket after all those rage quits.
First panic move: Grabbed my backup controller. Charged it up nice, synced it to the PS4. Feeling hopeful. Jumped back into 2K… same exact crap! Player frozen. Couldn’t even pause the dang game. Almost threw the controller at the wall right then. Deep breaths.
Figured it might be the game throwing a hissy fit. So I closed NBA 2K completely, restarted it. Waited for the loading screens like forever… jumped into a Quick Game. Guess what? Still couldn’t move! Felt like my thumbs were broken.
Went digging online, felt lost. Saw folks talking about router problems messing with controllers? Made zero sense to me, but desperate times. Restarted the router, restarted the PS4. Sat there like an idiot waiting for everything to boot back up. Fingers crossed… loaded 2K… nothing. Player still rooted to the spot. Pure frustration.
Then, I remembered something dumb. Earlier that day, my kid was playing some Lego game on the same PS4. Probably messed with settings. Opened up Settings on the PS4 dashboard, scrolled down to Devices, then Controllers.
The light bulb moment: Saw something called “Communication Method.” It was set to “Use Bluetooth” instead of “Use USB Cable.” Felt like a dummy. Plugged the controller directly into the PS4 with the USB cable. Went back into that controller setting and switched it to “Use USB Cable.”
Still had one last worry. Maybe NBA 2K itself had lost its controller config? Opened up the damn game again. Went straight into Options/Settings, then found Controller Settings. Scrolled down… saw “Reset to Default.” Smashed that button like my life depended on it. Confirmed the reset.
Final test time: Started a new game. Held my breath… moved the left stick. My player ACTUALLY WALKED! Pressed X for a pass – it worked! Felt like magic, honestly.
So, after wasting almost an hour:
- Check that PS4 Controller Setting: Settings > Devices > Controllers > Communication Method. Make sure it’s on “Use USB Cable” if you’re plugged in, especially if it randomly changed.
- Reset In-Game Controls: Inside NBA 2K, go to Options/Settings > Controller Settings > Reset to Default. Don’t skip this.
- Power Cycle Everything: Yeah, still worth a shot. Turn the PS4 fully off (not rest mode), unplug it for a minute, restart. Restart the game fresh.
Turns out my controllers weren’t busted, and neither was the game. Just some stupid hidden setting playing tricks on me. Hope this saves somebody else from near-controller-smashing rage!
