Okay so I’ve been playing Pokémon Go for ages, right? Always chasing the next cool thing. Heard whispers about this “Ultra Wormhole” stuff letting you catch crazy powerful Ultra Beasts. Sounded wild, honestly didn’t have a clue how it actually worked. Time to dive in and figure it out myself!

First Try Was a Total Mess
Hopped on the app one evening, just grinding away. All of a sudden, bam! This weird purple and black swirly portal-looking thing pops up right smack in the middle of my map. Like a rip in space or something. That was it, no warning, no big announcement. Kinda freaked me out, honestly. I tapped on it fast, you know? Didn’t want it to vanish. Game instantly threw me into this trippy swirling tunnel animation, colors zipping past. Felt like flying at warp speed. Then just dumped me face-to-face with this huge, freaky-looking Buzzwole bug thing. Muscle bug? Whatever, it was intense.
Figuring Out the Catch Mechanic (The Hard Way)
Here’s where things went sideways. The catching screen looked mostly normal, kinda like catching a Legendary in a raid. Except instead of my usual balls, it gave me Premier Balls. But the way the Pokémon moved? Totally different beast.Buzzwole was jumping around like crazy, super fast teleports, short attack animations – super hard to predict when to throw. My first few curve balls sailed right past it. Miss after miss! Used up like half my balls before I even hit the thing once.
- Panic threw straight balls: Yeah, bad idea. Even when I hit it, it broke out super easy.
- Tried waiting for its attack: Figured that trick might work, throw while it’s attacking so the ball hits after. But its attacks were so short and frequent, timing was brutal.
- Forgot about targeting: Seriously, in the panic, I wasn’t even trying for Nice or Great throws! Just desperate to connect.
Ran out of balls. Buzzwole fled. Felt like a total rookie. Gutted.
Practice Makes… Less Awful
Next few times a wormhole popped up (sometimes after raids, sometimes randomly, still not super clear what triggers them consistently for me), I got thrown at different Ultra Beasts. Kartana, Xurkitree. Same deal: fast movements, Premier Balls only. Key was patience. Learned to not just spam throws. Watched the pattern:
- They all have a rhythm: Usually jump/move a few times, then pause briefly or do a longer attack. That longer attack is the golden moment.
- Curve balls are NON-NEGOTIABLE: Seriously, just do it. Practice elsewhere if you have to. Premier Balls + No Curve = Escape Artist.
- Aim Small: Not just hitting it, you gotta go for Excellent throws, especially the lower your ball count is. That circle lock trick? Lifesaver. Hold the ball, wait for the attack, start spinning, release so the ball lands just as the attack ends and the circle is small.
Finally Getting It Down
Couple wormholes later, facing another Xurkitree. Remembered the drill. Took a deep breath. Ignored the weird wiggly animations. Focused only on the circle and the attack wind-ups. Waited for it to rear back for that zap attack. Held the ball. Saw the Excellent circle size. Started spinning. Released my curve as its attack animation began. Ball sailed… landed perfectly! Excellent Curve Ball! Shook once, twice, three times… clicked! YES!

Now, it’s still tense every time, no lie. These guys are tougher than your average raid boss to catch. But that moment when the ball clicks shut? Worth the initial struggle and frustration. You just gotta stay calm, focus on the circle, and curve the heck out of those throws every single time.
