Okay so yesterday I wanted to settle a bet with my buddy Dave. He swore up and down Lucas Borges played in Italy. I thought he was still in Brazil somewhere. So, I grabbed my phone and started digging. Figured it might make a decent share for today.

Starting Simple: Where the Heck is He Now?
First stop? Just typed “Lucas Borges soccer player now” into the search bar. Didn’t even bother trying to spell his name perfectly. Clicked the first couple links that popped up. Turns out I was half right, half wrong. He started in Brazil, sure. But right now? He’s in Canada. Playing for CF Montréal. That totally blew my mind. Canada! Didn’t see that coming. Their league is called Major League Soccer, or MLS for short.
Okay, But How Did He Get to Montreal?
Got the “where”, now I needed the “how” and “when”. Scrolled down a bit more on those search results. Found a page talking about his transfer. Dude bounced around Brazil a bit early on. Played for Botafogo, then Vasco da Gama… you know, decent teams but maybe not the absolute biggest giants at the time.
The curveball was Saudi Arabia. Apparently, before Montreal came calling, he spent a year with Al-Tai over there. Saudi league is throwing crazy money around lately, so that made sense. Then, bam! Summer of 2023, CF Montréal brings him over to North America.
Peeking Into the Future (Or Trying To)
So he’s in Canada now. But my buddy Dave’s Italy comment got me thinking: what’s next? This part was trickier. Hard to read tea leaves. Found a few sites talking about transfer rumors, but nothing super solid.
- Some gossip mentioned teams back in Brazil might want him back. Maybe a bigger club this time?
- Other whispers were about teams in Mexico. Liga MX, which is supposedly a step up in competition from MLS? Not totally sure about that.
- And yeah, my buddy Dave’s Italy thing popped up too. But it seemed like weak rumors – just “might be looked at” type stuff. Nothing concrete.
The general vibe I got? He’s playing okay in Montreal. Not lighting the world on fire, but solid. Unless someone offers Montreal a good chunk of cash, or he really pushes for a move, he might just stay put for another season. No major disaster or anything forcing him out. Just… soccer player doing his thing in Canada.

So Who Won the Bet?
Told Dave he was dead wrong about Italy. Ended up splitting the difference though. He thought Europe, I thought South America. We were both wrong – he’s playing for club football in North America! Cost us both a beer. Still, good excuse to dig into this. Never realized this guy’s path went Brazil -> Saudi Arabia -> Canada. The game takes players everywhere these days!
