Okay so today I was sitting around after lunch and randomly wondering about my own last name, Zhou. Like why do I even have this name? What’s the story behind it? Honestly no clue. So I grabbed my laptop and just started digging.

First Thing I Did
Typed “Zhou surname meaning” into the search bar – duh! Skimmed through the first few results. Didn’t wanna read those super long academic papers though, too much headache. Found some simple bullet points instead:
- Zhou basically means “circle” or “surround” in ancient Chinese
- Started waaay back during some king dude’s reign (around 1000 BC? Crazy old!)
- Originally belonged to royalty – like if you had this name back then, you were probably flexing hard
Got sidetracked for 15 minutes watching a video about Zhou dynasty bronze bowls. Looked shiny but totally irrelevant. Closed that tab real quick.
The Family Tree Rabbit Hole
Then I thought – wonder how many famous Zhous exist? Started listing ’em out in my notes app:
- That philosopher guy Zhou Gong (kept mixing him up with Confucius at first)
- Modern people like movie star Zhou Xun – cool she shares my name!
- Randomly remembered Jackie Chan’s actual surname is ALSO Zhou – mind blown
Got distracted imagining Jackie Chan being my distant cousin. Probably not though.
Spelling Confusion Madness
Suddenly realized Zhou gets spelled weird sometimes. Saw these variations:

- Chou (looks like “chow” but sounds totally different)
- Chao (nope that means stir-fry)
- Jou (who even does this?)
Tried pronouncing “Chou” out loud – sounded like sneezing. My cat looked concerned.
Putting It Together
Decided to organize everything into simple takeaways for my blog:
- Zhou = OG royal name from 3000 years ago
- Means “to encircle” – like protecting stuff I guess
- Over 10 million people have it now! That’s more than entire countries
- Spelling changes based on location/time period
Spilled coffee on my notes. Classic me. Thank god keyboards are waterproof-ish.
Ended up falling into celebrity genealogy searches for another hour. Found out like three directors named Zhou. Might do another post just about that later. Anyway – learned more about my name today than in 30+ years living with it!
