Where The Confusion Started
Alright, so I keep seeing people argue online about how tall George Hackenschmidt really was. Some sites say one thing, some say another, and honestly, it was doing my head in. I mean, this guy’s a legend, right? The “Russian Lion.” You’d think we’d know something basic like his height for sure. But nope, rumors all over the place. Mostly folks arguing whether he was actually this giant or if it was all hype back then. Got me curious enough to dig in myself.

My Deep Dive Begins
First thing I did was hit Google, obviously. Big mistake. Felt like falling down a rabbit hole. Every website seemed to parrot each other or just make wild guesses. 5 foot 11 inches? 6 feet? Maybe even taller? Sources were all over the map. Knew I needed better evidence than random forums or crappy articles repeating the same old thing.
Time To Get Serious
Started thinking: Where would they actually have measured this guy properly, maybe wrote it down? Went hunting for more reliable stuff:
- Old Wrestling Programmes: Found some scans from his touring days. Sometimes they listed his height, sometimes not. And when they did, it wasn’t consistent either. Super frustrating.
- Biographies & Books: Dug into some serious old books about his life and early wrestling history. A few actually mentioned his height! But guess what? Even these disagreed slightly. Like, really? Can no one measure a guy the same way twice?
- Training Manuals: Hackenschmidt wrote some stuff himself about training and strength. Didn’t expect him to list his height like on a dating profile, but hey, worth a shot. No luck there though.
The Breakthrough Moment
Kept pushing. Stumbled onto scans from newspaper articles from right around his peak wrestling years. Like, late 1800s/early 1900s stuff. Found one reporting from a big European event. Boom. There it was, plain as day. They listed him in centimetres. Did the math, because they loved different measurement systems back then.
But here’s the kicker – I didn’t stop there. Found another source, an official-ish report from one of his exhibitions. Gave the same measurement. Then saw a photo someone had shared, him standing next to another well-known wrestler whose height was documented. They lined up almost exactly like the measurements suggested.
So What Was The Real Deal?
Turns out, both the old books that seemed decent and the newspaper scans were actually on the right track. George Hackenschmidt was consistently measured, at his physical peak, at approximately 175 cm tall. That translates to roughly 5 feet 9 inches. Not 6 foot. Not even close to 6’2″ like some sites claim.

Myth Busting Done
Why did the myth of him being taller persist? Easy. He looked huge! Think about it. Broad shoulders like a barn door. Crazy thick chest and neck. Muscled everywhere. Even the photos from back then, even grainy ones, you can see the size of him. Compared to other men back then? Absolute beast. His muscle mass was genuinely immense. And in those old-timey photos where everyone looks kinda stiff? He stood out massively. People saw that strength and power and figured he must be taller. But nope. The documented size puts him right around 5’9″. Guess you don’t need to be a giant to be the strongest guy in the room. Feels good to put this one to bed!
