My Big 2016 Soccer Plan

So, back in 2016, with women’s soccer getting a lot of attention, especially around the big tournaments that year, I got this bright idea. I told myself, “I’m going to really dig deep into this. Not just watch, but really get it.” My goal was to follow one of the major women’s tournaments super closely, tracking everything I could. I was pretty hyped to start.

First thing I did, I got myself a new notebook. A big one. I planned to fill it with notes on team strategies, key players, and even how different playing conditions might be affecting the games. I figured I’d become a mini-expert by the end of it. I even thought about trying to predict match outcomes for fun with my buddies, based on all the detailed notes I was gonna take. I mapped out a schedule, deciding which games I absolutely had to watch live and which ones I could catch up on later with recordings.

I started off pretty strong. For the first few matches, I was there, pen in hand, scribbling away. Notes on formations, substitutions, who looked sharp, who seemed a bit off their game. It felt good, like I was really engaging with the sport on a new level.

Where Things Got a Bit Hazy

But, you know how it is. Life happens. The main problem was just keeping up. The tournament schedule was intense, games on at all sorts of hours. After a week or so, my diligent note-taking started to slip. Sometimes I’d only catch the second half, or I’d be watching while trying to do other stuff, so the notes got less detailed. That pristine notebook started having more blank pages than filled ones for some match days.

And honestly, trying to be so analytical took some of the pure fun out of just watching the game. Instead of just cheering or groaning, I was always thinking, “Okay, gotta write that down.” It started to feel a bit like homework, you know?

  • My initial burst of energy for detailed notes faded pretty quick.
  • Trying to watch every game properly became a real challenge.
  • Sometimes, I just wanted to relax and enjoy the match without overthinking it.

I remember one particular evening, there was a late-night match I was determined to take full notes on. I made it through the first half, scribbling away, then I must have nodded off on the sofa. Woke up, game was over, and my notebook was on the floor. That was a bit of a turning point, I guess.

What I Actually Took Away

So, did I become that super-informed soccer guru I envisioned? Nah, not really. My grand plan to meticulously document the whole 2016 women’s soccer scene kinda petered out. I still watched a lot of the games, especially the big ones, but the intensive note-taking? That fell by the wayside pretty hard.

What I really got out of it wasn’t a deep tactical understanding from my own notes. It was more a realization about my own limits and how I actually enjoy watching sports. Sometimes, just being a fan is enough. Trying to turn it into a research project, at least for me, wasn’t sustainable or even that enjoyable in the long run.

I still have that notebook. It’s got some really detailed notes for the first dozen or so games, then it gets patchier and patchier. It’s a good reminder that enthusiasm is great, but practical follow-through is a whole other ball game. And hey, I still love watching women’s soccer, probably more so now that I don’t feel pressured to write everything down. Just enjoying the skill and the drama, that’s plenty for me.
