Always a Surprise, Huh?

So, I got to thinking the other day, what’s actually the top dog in American sports? You know, the one that everyone tunes into. I had my theories, of course. Lots of noise about basketball, right? All those highlight reels, the sneakers, the global stars. Made sense to me. Or maybe baseball – kept hearing it called ‘America’s pastime.’ Sounds pretty official, doesn’t it?

Yeah, well, I was just spitballing, really. Didn’t do any deep dives or data crunching. Who has time for that? I just kind of asked around, listened to people chatting at the coffee shop, that sort of thing. It’s funny how you can live somewhere and still be totally out of the loop on what seems like basic stuff to locals.

Then it hit me. Or rather, someone basically spelled it out for me. American football. Not just regular football, no, the American kind. And apparently, it’s not even a close race. It’s like THE thing.

This whole experience, of being so off base, it really threw me back to this one time, a completely different situation, but same kinda feeling. I was doing this odd job, helping out at some local fair. This was ages ago, when I was still figuring things out, trying to get by. They had this contest, a ‘best dessert’ thing. I thought, “Easy. Apple pie. It’s gotta be apple pie. It’s America!” I was so sure, I nearly bet my lunch money on it.

And then they announce the winner. Drumroll please… some fancy layered Jell-O mold. Jell-O! Can you believe it? Not even a pie! I just stood there, completely baffled. My supervisor, this lady who’d seen it all, she just patted me on the shoulder and said, “Honey, you learn something new every day, especially ’round here.” Apparently, that Jell-O thing was a local legend, passed down for generations. Who knew?

It was a proper “huh?” moment for me. And it’s the same vibe I got when I finally twigged about football. You see, I’d seen football games on TV, bits here and there. Looked complicated. Lots of starting and stopping. Didn’t quite grab me like a fast basketball game. But then you see the sheer scale of it. The stadiums, the tailgating, the way entire Sundays are dedicated to it. It’s not just a game; it’s this massive cultural event. The Super Bowl? Forget about it. It’s like a national holiday. People who don’t watch a single other game all year, they watch the Super Bowl.

So, my ‘practice’ was more like a slow, slightly embarrassing realization. I didn’t conduct a survey or read a bunch of reports. I just sort of stumbled into the truth, much like I stumbled into the truth about that prize-winning Jell-O. It just goes to show, you can think you’ve got a handle on things, but there’s always something that’ll surprise you, especially when it comes to what people are really passionate about. It’s a good reminder to actually listen and observe, instead of just assuming. You live and you learn, I guess. Or in my case, you guess wrong and then someone tells you!
