Turns out, it’s Know Your Supplier. And let me tell you, I wish I’d known about it, or at least taken it seriously, before I got totally shafted a while back. I was trying to get some custom-made widgets for this little online shop idea I had. Found this supplier, looked all professional online, prices were amazing. Too good to be true, really, which should’ve been a massive red flag, but hey, I was eager.
So, I sent them my designs, paid a hefty deposit – felt like a big shot for a minute. Then the waiting began. And the excuses. First, it was a “delay in materials,” then their “main machine broke down.” Emails started getting vaguer, responses slower. Finally, weeks and weeks late, this box shows up. I was so excited, ripped it open, and… just junk. Absolute junk. Looked nothing like what I ordered, shoddy quality, half of it was broken. Tried to call them, email them to sort it out or get my money back? Crickets. Website vanished. Phone number disconnected. Poof. Money gone, dream dented.
That’s when a mate of mine, who’s been in the trenches with his own small business for years, kinda sighed and said, “Sounds like you skipped the KYS part, eh?” I had no clue what he was on about at first.
So, what exactly is this KYS thing then?
He explained it pretty simply. Know Your Supplier. It’s basically the process of doing your homework on who you’re about to give your hard-earned cash to. Before you sign any contracts or send any money, you actually check out the people or company you’re planning to buy from. You make sure they are who they say they are and that they can actually deliver what they promise.
It’s not about being paranoid, it’s about being smart. You wouldn’t just pick a random builder from a flyer to build an extension on your house without checking their previous work or if they’re even a real company, right? It’s the same idea, but for businesses buying stuff from other businesses.
I learned the hard way that you really gotta look into a few things:
- Are they a legit, registered company? Or just some fly-by-night operation?
- What’s their reputation like? Can you find reviews or talk to other businesses they’ve supplied?
- Are they financially stable enough not to disappear with your deposit?
- Do they actually have the capability to produce what you need, at the quality you need?
It’s kind of like that ‘KYC’ thing you hear about – Know Your Customer – that banks and financial places do. That’s them vetting you. Well, KYS is you vetting them. It’s all about making sure you’re not walking into a disaster, and you’re partnering with reliable folks.
Ever since that nightmare with the widgets, I’m way more careful. I ask more questions, I try to find real people behind the website, I look for any dirt I can find. Sometimes I even start with a tiny order just to see how they handle it. It takes a bit more effort upfront, for sure. But man, it saves a ton of grief and money down the line. So yeah, KYS. It’s not just some fancy business talk; for me, it’s a survival skill I had to learn.
