Alright, so I was pottering around in my workshop the other day. You know how it is, got a few projects on the go, and this one particular thing had been bugging me. I was trying to fit a new component, a small custom bracket I’d designed, into an existing setup.

The plans I had scribbled down, well, they had this one critical measurement: 43mm. Now, here’s the thing. I grew up using inches, all my good tools, my trusty tape measure, even the way my brain visualizes space, it’s all in inches. So, 43 millimeters… I was staring at that number, and it just wasn’t clicking. Is that big? Small? Like a chunky button or more like a small coin? I really needed to get a feel for it in inches to make sure it would fit right with the other parts I already had.

So, what’s a guy to do? I went over to my computer, figured I’d look up the conversion. It’s one of those things you do a million times but never quite memorize the exact factor, right? Found out, pretty quickly, that to get from millimeters to inches, you gotta multiply. The magic number, if you’re ever wondering, is 0.039370078740233. Bit of a long one, that.

I pulled up the calculator on my phone – who even owns a standalone calculator anymore, unless you’re an engineer or something? Anyway, I punched in the numbers:

  • First, the 43 (for the millimeters).
  • Then, multiplied it by that long decimal: 0.039370078740233.

And out popped the answer: 1.69291338583 inches.

Okay, so, 1.69-and-a-bit inches. For practical purposes, I just rounded that in my head to about 1.7 inches. Or, if you’re like me and sometimes think better in fractions for workshop stuff, that’s just a hair over 1 and 11/16 inches. Suddenly, it made sense! I could picture that perfectly. It was just under one and three-quarter inches. That I can work with!

Knowing that made all the difference. I could finally confirm that the little bracket would slot in nicely without needing to shave bits off or, worse, find out it was too small after getting it made. It’s funny, isn’t it? Such a small thing, a simple conversion, but it can be the key to moving forward. Saved me a headache, that’s for sure. Now, onto the next step of that project… which probably involves another measurement I’ll have to double-check!
