My Miki Lee Experiment – What a Ride!

Alright, so there’s this name, Miki Lee, that kinda got stuck in my head a while back. Wasn’t a person I knew, not really. I first stumbled upon some art online, or maybe it was a craft style, tagged with “miki lee”. Looked kinda cool, you know? Simple, but with a certain something. So, I thought, “Hey, I could probably try that. How hard can it be?” Famous last words, right?

So, I decided my little project would be to try and capture that Miki Lee vibe. First thing, I did a bit more digging. Not like, stalker digging, just trying to see more examples of this style. Seemed to be a lot about clean lines and a sort of understated, thoughtful feel. Okay, got it. Or so I thought.

My first step was getting some basic materials. Didn’t want to spend a fortune, just a few bits and pieces from the local craft store. Figured I’d start with a small piece, maybe a little decorative panel or something. The plan was simple: look at a few “miki lee” inspired images, get the feel, and then just let my creativity flow. Ha!

The actual doing part? That was, uh, an experience. I spread everything out on the kitchen table. Had my reference pictures up on my tablet. And I just… stared. Trying to get those clean lines? My hands were apparently having a party of their own, a very shaky, wobbly party. What looked effortless in the pictures was turning into a bit of a mess on my board.

  • Attempt one: Looked like a blob. A well-intentioned blob, but a blob nonetheless.
  • Attempt two: Lines were a bit straighter, but the “understated feel” was more like “underwhelming and a bit sad.”
  • Attempt three: I started getting frustrated. You know that feeling when you can see it in your head, but your hands just won’t cooperate? Yeah, that was me. Big time.

I spent a good few hours on this. Pushing paint around, trying different tools (mostly just cheap brushes and a palette knife I probably wasn’t using right). My kitchen table started looking like a modern art piece itself, just not the good kind. More like the “what on earth happened here?” kind. It was definitely harder than it looked.

In the end, what I made didn’t exactly scream “Miki Lee.” It was… well, it was my version of trying to do a Miki Lee. It had some of the colors, maybe a hint of the intended simplicity, but it was clearly a beginner’s bash at it. I remember looking at it and thinking, “Well, that’s a thing I made.” Not exactly a masterpiece for the ages.

But you know what? Even though it wasn’t perfect, or even that good, the process itself was… interesting. It’s one thing to look at something and admire it, and a whole other thing to actually try and do it. Made me appreciate the skill involved a lot more. So, yeah, my Miki Lee experiment. Didn’t quite nail it, but I learned a bit. Mostly about my own patience, or lack thereof, and that some things are just best left to the Miki Lees of the world. Or maybe I just need a lot more practice. We’ll see. For now, I think I’ll just admire from afar.
