Do you really know what is riding the clutch? It is a very bad habit for your car!

Alright, so let me tell you about my early days trying to master the art of driving a stick shift. It feels like a lifetime ago, but I can still picture my old man, bless his soul, trying to teach me in his ancient, rattling Ford pickup. That thing had a clutch that felt like a leg press machine, and I swear, the gear stick had a mind of its own. Every time I thought I was getting the hang of it, bang, we’d stall, usually right in the middle of an intersection, much to the symphony of honking horns around us.

Do you really know what is riding the clutch? It is a very bad habit for your car!

My dad, he wasn’t exactly a Zen master when it came to teaching. He’d keep barking, “You’re riding the clutch! Stop riding it, son!” And honestly, for the longest time, I had no earthly idea what he was even talking about. Riding it? Was I supposed to take my foot completely off after every tiny movement? It sounded crazy to me. I was just trying to keep the darn thing from bucking like a rodeo bull or dying on me.

Figuring Out What “Riding the Clutch” Actually Meant

It took a fair bit of, let’s call it ‘spirited discussion’ and a lot of jerky, kangaroo-like starts before the penny finally dropped. “Riding the clutch,” as it turns out, isn’t about being smooth. It’s this bad habit of keeping your foot resting on the clutch pedal when you’re not actively shifting gears or about to stop. Or, even worse, keeping the pedal partially pressed down while you’re driving along. I used to do this a lot, especially in slow traffic, thinking I was being clever and ready to shift at a moment’s notice. Turns out, I wasn’t being clever at all.

So, what’s the big deal? Why did my dad get so worked up about it? Well, one afternoon, after a particularly “fragrant” drive where I could smell something hot and vaguely chemical, he sat me down. He explained, in his own colorful way, that when you ride the clutch, you’re not letting it fully engage. Those clutch plates, or whatever they are, are spinning and rubbing against each other when they shouldn’t be. Imagine trying to run a race while someone’s lightly holding you back the whole time. You’re just creating unnecessary friction and heat. That was the smell! My poor driving was literally burning up the clutch.

I had to consciously retrain my left foot. It was like teaching an old dog new tricks, even though I was the young pup in this scenario. I started to really focus:

  • Push clutch in: When I needed to shift gears, or when coming to a complete stop. All the way to the floor.
  • Shift gear: Do the thing with the stick.
  • Ease clutch out: Smoothly, find that biting point.
  • Foot completely OFF: This was the kicker. Get that foot away from the pedal. Let it rest on the floor, or on that little footrest thingy next to the pedals if the car has one.

It felt super awkward at first. My foot kept wanting to hover, to be “ready.” But I forced myself. And you know what? The car started to behave. Shifts got smoother. No more weird burning smells. And, best of all, my dad’s blood pressure seemed to return to a more normal level during our lessons. He even grunted what I think was approval once or twice.

I realized I was especially bad at riding the clutch on hills or when I was anticipating a stop. I’d keep it half-pressed, thinking I was controlling the car better. Nope. That just wears it out faster. You’re either in gear with the clutch fully engaged (foot off), or you’re out of gear/shifting with the clutch fully disengaged (foot down). That “in-between” zone while cruising? That’s the fast track to a mechanic’s bill.

So yeah, that’s my little adventure in understanding what “riding the clutch” really is. It’s not some super-secret pro-driver move. It’s just a common mistake that can mess up your car. It took some practice, a bit of yelling, and a conscious effort to break the bad habit, but eventually, I got it. Now, my left foot knows its place: on the floor, unless it’s showtime for a gear change.
