And the idea is, you win the skin if you get the lowest score on that hole outright. No ties allowed, usually. That’s the kicker. The way we started doing it was pretty straightforward. Before we teed off on the first hole, everyone chipped in a few bucks. Let’s say five dollars each. So, if there are four of us, that’s twenty bucks in the pot right there. Then we decided how much each hole, or ‘skin’, was worth. Sometimes we’d make the first few holes worth less, and the last few, especially the 18th, worth a bit more to spice things up.
So, we’d tee off. Everyone plays their own ball, standard stroke play. At the end of the hole, we’d compare scores. If I got a 4, and everyone else got a 5 or higher, boom, that skin was mine. I’d pocket the cash value for that hole. But, and this is where it gets fun, if say, I got a 4, and another guy also got a 4, and no one else beat that, then nobody won that skin. It wasn’t split. Nope. That skin, and its cash value, rolled over to the next hole. So, the next hole might be worth two skins, or even more if there were a few ties in a row!
- We always agreed on the buy-in amount first. No surprises.
- Then, we’d set the value for each skin. Or sometimes, we’d just divide the total pot by 18 holes, but honestly, carry-overs are way more fun.
- Lowest score on a hole, without any ties for that lowest score, wins the skin for that hole.
- If there’s a tie for the lowest score, the skin carries over. You can imagine, some holes towards the end could get pretty valuable! We once had six skins ride to the 18th!
I gotta say, it really changed how I approached some rounds. Suddenly, even if your overall round is a bit of a disaster, you can still win some holes, win some skins, and come out feeling pretty good. It keeps you focused on every single hole. You’re not just trying to beat your personal best; you’re trying to beat your buddies on this specific hole.
And the pressure! Man, when a few skins have carried over, and you’re standing over a putt knowing it could win you a decent little pile of cash for the clubhouse… yeah, that gets the heart pumping. It’s less about the money itself, for us anyway, more about the bragging rights and that little bit of extra competition. We weren’t playing for fortunes, just enough to make it interesting, maybe cover the drinks at the 19th hole.
I remember this one time, we had like, five skins carry over to the 17th. The pot was getting pretty chunky for our usual game. My buddy Dave, who’d been having a shocker of a round, absolutely duffed his tee shot. We all thought he was out of it.
