Alright, so I sat down to watch that Benfica against Marseille game the other night. Had been looking forward to it, you know? Two teams with some history, always expect a bit of fire.

Got my setup ready, grabbed some snacks. Thought it’d be a straightforward watch. But football, it’s never really straightforward, is it?

Getting into the game

The first few minutes, I was just trying to get a feel for it. Both teams seemed a bit cautious, like they were sizing each other up. Not the explosive start I kinda hoped for, but okay, sometimes it builds up.

  • Benfica tried to play their usual game, moving the ball around.
  • Marseille looked like they were set up to counter, trying to be solid at the back.

Honestly, for a while there, it felt a bit stuck. Lots of midfield action, but not much happening in the boxes. You know those games? Where you’re waiting for something, anything, to spark it?

What Stood Out To Me

What really got my attention wasn’t necessarily brilliant tactics, but more the individual moments. Saw a few flashes from some players. Di Maria for Benfica, still got that touch, doesn’t he? Always looking for that killer pass.

And Marseille, well, Aubameyang is always a threat, even when he doesn’t see much of the ball. You just know he’s lurking, waiting for one chance. That keeps you on edge.

But here’s the thing, the overall flow? Felt disjointed sometimes. Passes going astray, players maybe not quite on the same wavelength. It wasn’t sloppy, exactly, just… not smooth. Maybe the pressure? Hard to say from my couch.

End Game Thoughts

As it went on, things definitely opened up a bit more. Goals change games, always do. The reactions from the players, the shift in energy, that’s what I find interesting. You see who steps up, who fades a bit.

By the final whistle, I wasn’t blown away, if I’m being honest. It was a contest, for sure. Fought hard. But it wasn’t one of those classic matches you talk about for ages. It was… a European knockout game. Tense, a bit nervy, decided by moments rather than total dominance.

Finished my snacks, turned off the TV. Just another football night, really. You watch, you hope, sometimes it delivers fireworks, sometimes it’s just a slow burn. This felt more like the slow burn. Still, better than no football, right?
