So, decided a trip to Rotto was long overdue. Sun, sand, and those little quokka fellas, right? First thing, obviously, was figuring out how to actually get onto the island. You can’t just swim there, well, I suppose you could try, but the ferry seemed like the sensible option.

Sorting Out the Ferry Ride
Alright, jumped online. Quickly realized there wasn’t just one boat going over. You’ve got a couple of companies running ferries, mostly leaving from either Fremantle or right from Perth city. Had a bit of a look at the departure times and where they left from. For me, leaving from Fremantle made more sense – easier parking and felt a bit closer to the sea vibe already.
Found the website for the company that looked best for my schedule. Navigating websites can sometimes be a pain, but this one was fairly straightforward, thankfully. You gotta pick your date to go over, and the date you wanna come back. Pretty standard stuff.
Locking in the Tickets
I punched in the dates I wanted. Then you gotta select the actual times for the ferry. They had a few options, morning, midday, afternoon. I went for an early one going over to make the most of the day, and a mid-afternoon one coming back. Didn’t want to be rushing off the island too late.
Next step was adding who was going. Just needed names, pretty simple. They usually calculate the island admission fee right into the ticket price, which is handy. Saves lining up to pay when you get there, I guess. Saw options to add bike hire too. Thought about it, but decided I’d sort that out once I was actually on the island. Didn’t want to commit just yet.
- Picked departure point (Fremantle for me).
- Chose the dates and times.
- Entered passenger details.
- Skipped the bike hire add-on for now.
Then came the payment part. Pulled out the trusty credit card, entered all the numbers, expiry date, the little code on the back. Did the usual double-check to make sure I hadn’t messed up any digits. Clicked the ‘confirm’ or ‘pay now’ button, whatever it was.

Success! Got the confirmation screen pop up almost immediately. Phew. Always a little moment of holding your breath until you see that. An email with the booking details landed in my inbox a minute later too. So, that’s that sorted. Tickets booked. Just needed to remember to either print them out or have the email ready on my phone for the day.
Honestly, it wasn’t too complicated. Just took a bit of clicking around. Now, just gotta wait for the actual trip. Looking forward to it.
