Okay, so, today I’m gonna talk about my little adventure with this person, Emma Jane Wilson. I’d heard the name before, she’s some kind of artist, makes sculptures, right? And she’s apparently pretty big in the horse racing world too. So I was like, “Alright, let’s see what this is all about.”
First thing I did was look her up, just to get a basic idea. Turns out, she’s an award-winning educator and artist, living in North Carolina. Cool, cool. Her art stuff is all about these weird, kinda messed up sculptures of people, made out of clay. She grew up in Mississippi, which is interesting.
Diving Deeper into Her Art
So I started checking out her art. Man, it’s wild. These sculptures, they’re like, human, but not really. It’s like she’s trying to show us something about human behavior, but in a totally bizarre way. I read somewhere that she calls it “posthumanism,” whatever that means. It made me think, for sure.
I tried making my own clay sculpture, inspired by her style. Let me tell you, it’s harder than it looks. Getting the clay to do what you want, shaping it, making it look even a little bit human-like…it’s tough. I ended up with this blobby thing that looked nothing like hers. But hey, it was fun trying. I felt connected to the material, even though my thing was a total mess.
Emma-Jayne, the Jockey?
Then there’s the whole horse racing thing. I found out that she used to be a jockey. Like, a really good one. Apparently, she finished her studies in 2002, worked on a breeding farm, and then went to this place called Woodbine. She won a ton of races, and even broke some records. There was this one race on July 11th where she beat some Hall of Fame jockey’s record for the most money won. She’s won like, 1,930 races. That’s insane!
I watched a few of her races online. It’s intense! The speed, the strategy, the way she handled those horses… it’s a whole different world. I even tried to mimic her riding style, just messing around on a chair, pretending it was a horse. Yeah, I looked ridiculous, but it gave me a tiny bit of appreciation for what she did.
Putting it All Together
So, what did I learn from my little Emma Jane Wilson deep dive? Well, she’s clearly a multi-talented person. Her art is thought-provoking and weird, in a good way. Her racing career is impressive as heck. She’s also a teacher and just seems to have a good head on her shoulders.

It was a fun little journey learning about her, and it definitely got me thinking outside the box. Plus, I have a new respect for both clay sculptors and jockeys. They’re both way harder than they look!
