Alright, let me tell you about this headache I had the other day. Fired up the PC, ready to jump into some Call of Duty, you know how it is. And bam! Hit with this annoying message: “networking failed to start” or something really close to that. Couldn’t get online at all. Super frustrating when you’ve finally got some time to play.

Why does networking failed to start call of duty happen often? Understand the common causes and simple fixes.

First thing I did, the usual stuff. Closed the game, opened it again. Nope. Restarted my whole computer. Still nothing. Checked my internet connection – everything else was working fine, browsing websites, other apps connecting okay. So, I figured, maybe the router needs a kick. Went and unplugged the modem and router, waited like a minute, plugged them back in. Waited for all the lights to come back on. Tried Call of Duty again… same stupid error. Ugh.

Digging into the Network Mess

At this point, I started thinking it wasn’t just my basic internet connection. Maybe it was something specific with the game talking to the servers. I remember reading somewhere ages ago that sometimes Call of Duty gets picky if your internet address, your IP address they call it, changes around too much or looks weird to their servers. They kinda put a temporary block on it sometimes. Sounded weird but hey, I was running out of ideas.

So, I thought about what could be causing that. Here’s what I tried next:

  • Checked for Game Updates: Seemed simple, but sometimes an old version causes weird network problems. Opened up the launcher, made sure Call of Duty was fully updated. There wasn’t a big update pending, but I let it verify the game files just in case something got messed up. Still no luck after it finished.
  • Network Reset on PC: Went deeper than just restarting the router. I went into the Windows settings, found the network reset option. It basically wipes your network settings clean and reinstalls the adapters. Had to re-enter my Wi-Fi password afterward, which was a bit of a pain, but I was desperate. Restarted the PC again after the reset.
  • The IP Address Thing Again: Since the network reset didn’t immediately fix it, I thought back to that IP address lock idea. Maybe resetting my network gave me a new address, but the game servers were still confused or holding onto the old temporary block. So, I decided to just… wait. I turned off the PC completely, unplugged the modem and router again, but this time left them off for a good 10-15 minutes. Figured maybe that would give everything enough time to properly clear out, both on my end and maybe whatever lock the game server had put on.

Finally Back In

Plugged everything back in, let the internet fully come back up, booted the PC, held my breath, and launched Call of Duty. And what do you know? It actually worked! Connected straight away, no error message. It felt like a miracle after all that messing around.

So, what was the magic trick? Honestly, I think it was a combination. Making sure the game was updated was probably important, but the big thing seemed to be doing that full network reset on my computer and giving the modem/router a longer-than-usual break unplugged. Maybe that cleared the supposed IP confusion on the server side. It’s hard to say for sure, these network things can be a black box sometimes. But hey, I got back into the game, and that’s what counts. Just wanted to share what I went through in case anyone else hits that frustrating wall.
