First thing I did was grab the text, obviously. Read it a couple of times, highlighting bits and pieces that jumped out at me. Stuff like “myrrh,” “frankincense,” “garden enclosed,” you know, really vivid stuff. I wanted to see if I could evoke that kind of feeling through audio.
Then came the fun part. I booted up my DAW – that’s Digital Audio Workstation, for those not in the know – and just started experimenting. I started by trying to get a sense of the overall mood. Chapter 3 felt a bit more mysterious, like a search, so I played around with some darker, more atmospheric sounds. Lots of reverb, delay, and some synth pads to create a sense of space.
Chapter 4, on the other hand, felt way more vibrant and sensual. All that talk of gardens and spices? I wanted to capture that. I started layering in some warmer tones, like acoustic instruments and maybe even some sampled bird sounds. I was really trying to create this feeling of abundance and beauty.
The biggest challenge was avoiding being too literal. I didn’t want to just slap a “garden” sound effect on there and call it a day. The goal was to capture the essence of the text, not just directly represent it.
I spent a good few hours just tweaking sounds, layering them, EQ-ing them, the whole shebang. It was a lot of trial and error, but slowly but surely, something started to take shape. It wasn’t perfect, mind you, but it was definitely getting closer to what I had in my head.
I still need to refine it, but I feel I’ve made progress. It was a pretty cool exercise, and it forced me to think about sound in a different way. Made me realize the power of suggestion when it comes to audio. You don’t always need to be explicit to convey a feeling or an idea.
