Okay, so today I’m gonna share my thoughts on the best Formula 1 drivers of all time. It’s a super subjective topic, right? Everyone has their favorites, and it’s tough to compare drivers from different eras. But, I’ve been following F1 for years, so I figured I’d give it a shot.

First off, I started by making a list of all the drivers that consistently came to mind when I thought about F1 legends. Names like Senna, Schumacher, Fangio, Clark, Prost, Hamilton – the usual suspects, basically. I just jotted them all down, no particular order.

Then, I figured I needed some kind of criteria to try and rank them. Pure speed is important, obviously. But so is consistency, racecraft, adaptability, and the ability to perform under pressure. You know, the mental game.

Here’s what I considered:

  • World Championships: Pretty self-explanatory. Wins matter.
  • Race Wins: Similar to above, but gives a broader picture of success.
  • Pole Positions: Shows pure pace and qualifying ability.
  • Win Percentage: How often they won when they started a race.
  • Longevity: How long they were able to perform at a high level.
  • Dominance: How much they dominated their era.
  • Influence: Their impact on the sport, both on and off the track.

Next, I dove into the stats. Wikipedia became my best friend! I looked up the career records of each driver on my list, paying close attention to the numbers I mentioned above. I tried not to get too caught up in the numbers, though. Stats don’t tell the whole story.

For example, Fangio’s win percentage is insane, but he was also driving in an era with much less reliable cars. Schumacher’s dominated the early 2000s with Ferrari, but he also had a car that was often significantly better than the competition. And Hamilton has the most wins and championships, but he’s also been racing in a very long era with generally reliable cars.

After the stats, I tried to recall some iconic races and moments of each driver. Senna’s battles with Prost, Schumacher’s wet weather masterclasses, Clark’s sheer speed in the Lotus – those kinds of things. It’s about remembering the feeling you got watching them, the excitement they brought to the sport.

It’s hard to eliminate bias completely, especially since I started watching F1 during the Schumacher era, so I do tend to favour those drivers. But I did my best to keep my personal preferences in check.

Finally, I put together my personal list, acknowledging that it’s just one opinion among many.

My (Very Subjective) Top F1 Drivers of All Time:

  1. Michael Schumacher
  2. Ayrton Senna
  3. Lewis Hamilton
  4. Juan Manuel Fangio
  5. Jim Clark
  6. Alain Prost

Look, it’s just my opinion, alright? The truth is, you could argue for any of these guys (and many others) to be at the top of the list. What really matters is appreciating the skill, courage, and dedication that all these drivers brought to the sport. These guys are all legends.

Anyway, that’s how I approached thinking about the best F1 drivers of all time. Let me know what you think! Who’s on your list?
